Introduction

Droupadi Murmu was born on 20th of June 1958. Her birth name is Puti Biranchi Tudu. We know Smt. Pratibha Patil was the first woman President of India winning the presidential election 2007 and served the nation from 25 July 2007 to 25 July 2012. Droupadi Murmu is the second woman President of India. Droupadi Murmu belongs to the tribal community. She is the first person belonging to the tribal community who holds the office of the President of India.

    Married Life

    Draupadi Murmu married to Shyam Charan Murmu in 1980. Her husband was a banker. She had two sons and a daughter with her husband. In 2014, her husband Shyam Charan Murmu passed away following a cardiac arrest. The period from 2009 to 2014 was very challenging for Draupadi Murmu. In these 6 years, her husband, two sons, mother and a brother passed away. Mrs. Murmu suffered from depression for six months but ultimately got rid of it with the help of spirituality. For this, she joined joined Brahma Kumaris, a spiritual organization.

    Early Career

    From 1979 to 1983, Mrs. Murmu worked as clerk ( junior assistant) in the State Irrigation and Power Department, the Government of Odisha. She started teaching at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre in Rairangpur in 1994. She continued her teaching there until 1997.

    Political career

    The President work as teacher from 1994 to 1997. In 1997, Draupadi Murmu contested the election of Nagar Panchayat, Rairangpur. The seat was reserved for women. She contested the election as a independent candidate. She became the councillor of the Rairangpur Nagar panchayat after winning the election. Subsequently seed joined the Bhartiya Janata party. Mrs. Draupadi Murmu served as an MLA for two times. Between the years 2000 and 2009, she was elected for the Odisha Legislative Assembly from Rairangpur constituency. She lost the Lok Sabha election from Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha constituency in 2009.

    Important Positions held by Draupadi Murmu

    The Minister of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transportation (Duration: From 6 March 2000 to 6 August 2002 , coalition government of BJP and BJD- Biju Janata Dal). From 6 August 2002 to 16 May 2004, she served as the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Fisheries and Animal Resources Development as well.

    Draupadi Murmu as the Governor of Jharkhand

    She became the 9th Governor of Jharkhand. She sworn in on 18 May 2015 and served till 12 July 2021. She was the first woman Governor of Jharkhand. Also, she was the first tribal woman Governor in India. She served in her office as the Governor of Jharkhand for a tenuure of six years. When Murmu was the governor of the state of Jharkhand, she passed the religion bill. What was the religion bill? This bill was dealt with prohibition of forced conversion. Jharkhand Freedom of Religion Act, 2017 is an Act to provide for prohibition of conversion from one religion to another by the use of force or allurement or by fraudulent means and for matters incidental thereto. A person engaged in a forceful conversion will be punished severely by the law. There can be long-term imprisonments accompanied by fines. Smt. Murmu approved the bill to amend the Land Acquisition 2013 Act passed by the Jharkhand Assembly. The amendments in the bill included changes in the compensation duration and requirements for social impacts assessment. As per the Act, compensation amount must be given by the government for the acquisition of the land meant for the tribal population within a period of six months.

    Before Droupadi Murmu, Neelam Sanjiv Reddy who born on 19 May 1913, was the youngest President of India and he assumed the office of the President on 25 July 1977 at the age 64 years 4 months 6 days. But, this record has been beaten by Droupadi Murmu, as she born on 20 June 1958 assumed the office of the President of India on 25 July 2022 at the age of 64 years 1 month 5 days. That is Droupadi Murmu is 3 months 1 day younger than Neelam Sanjiv Reddy in terms of holding the office of the President of India.

    The first President of India born in the Independent India - Droupadi Murmu

    The intresting fact is that si far no President of India has been born in the Independent India. The former president of India Ram Nath Kovind was born on 1 October 1945. Our country India became independent on 15th of August 1947 from the British government. Except Draupadi Murmu, all the Presidents of India so far have been born before independent India i.e. before 1947.

    When Draupadi Murmu went into depression

    Smt. Draupadi Murmu faced very tough test when the situations we are going to talk about, came into her life. Draupadi Murmu had three children. Two sons and a daughter. In 2009, one of her sons passed away in mysterious circumstances. 25 years old Laxman Murmu was found unconscious state in his bed, say reports. After three years, in 2012 her second son Shipun who was 28 also passed away in a road accident. The family was yet to recover from the grief that her husband Shyam Charan Murmu died of a cardiac arrest in 2014. Murmu had to bear the shock of the death of two sons and husband in four years. Her only daughter Itishree works at a bank in Odisha. She is married to Ganesh Hembram, who is a rugby player. It is said that after the death of the elder son, Murmu suffered from depression and anxiety. She came out of depression on the strength of her own courage. To get rid of depression and anxiety, Murmu took the help of spirituality. Murmu joined a spiritual organization called Brahma Kumaris. She decided to rise above her personal tragedies and dedicated her life to social reform and public service.

    NDA nominated Draupadi Murmu as its presidential candidate for the 2022 election. The opposition presidential candidate was Yashwant Sinha nominated by the opposition parties. The election was held on 18 July 2022. The counting was taken place on 21 July 2022. Smt. Murmu secured a clear majority in the 2022 Presidential election. She defeated common opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha with 64.03% electoral votes. She took oath of office on the Central Hall of Parliament. The oath was administered by the Chief Justice N. V. Ramana. She was elected as the 15th President of India and assumed office on 25 July 2022.
